Explore your identity through creative self-expression using FCMoD’s special exhibitions Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity and The Bias Inside Us. Connect with yourself and others using poetry as an interface between the heart and mind. Join FCMoD and artist, Ally Eden, for a 2-part poetry workshop and discover how poetry can change the way we relate. Using FCMoD’s current exhibitions Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity and The Bias Inside Us, as inspiration, we will engage in writing exercises that help us feel our way to understanding across the galaxy of human experience. This workshop series builds and culminates in a group show celebrating the participants’ work as part of FCMoD’s Tuesday Night Live event series that runs throughout the exhibit’s installation. Participation in both workshops is highly encouraged, but drop-ins and one-off attendees are welcome.

Workshop 1

Sunday Dec. 1PICK ONE
10:00am-12:00pm
1:00pm-3:00pm

In this generative workshop, we’ll start with a free tour of FCMoD’s current exhibitions, Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity and The Bias Inside Us, and pair that experience with poignant poetry from around the world. We will ask questions about how we view and understand ourselves in relation to others’ art and draft poems that reflect our own identities through a series of prompts. Spanish, Arabic and auditory aids will be available. Write and read in the language of your heart! No prior experience necessary. Interpretation available upon request.

Workshop 2

Sunday Dec. 7
10:00am-12:00pm

Workshop two builds on workshop one. Get to know more poets in the program as we move beyond the page into the space of sonics. Applying new techniques to our previously drafted poems, we’ll work toward polished pieces that skillfully illuminate our unique voices. With the help of a guest “star” facilitator, writers will practice reading poetry onstage and get one-on-one coaching before the group show. Interpretation available upon request.

Poetry Reading: Open to the Public

Tuesday Dec. 10
6:00pm-8:00pm

A celebration! Share your work and connect with others during a stellar display of talent and human connection FCMoD’s OtterBox Digital Dome Theater! Workshop participants will have free entry to the museum during this event, and those who choose to read their work aloud will gain two free guest tickets. A note that readers will be assigned to the first or second set of performances, with a 15-minute interview between each set.
