Feel the Heat! Supervolcanoes explores rare types of volcanic eruptions that marshal the energy that lurks, like a sleeping dragon, beneath the surface of planet Earth. The story of these big blow outs is a tale of havoc and mayhem: mass extinctions, climate collapses, and violence beyond anything humans have ever witnessed. In this unique immersive experience, audiences will explore the impact of volcanism on Earth and other worlds in our solar system. Can a supervolcano erupt in our own time? The answer is surprisingly close to home.

Supervolcanoes is a co-production of Spitz Creative Media, Mirage3D and Thomas Lucas Productions, Inc., in association with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who Is Dr. Temple Grandin?

Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is a professor, best-selling author, animal behaviorist, scientist, and autism self-advocate. Diagnosed with autism when she was three, Dr. Grandin’s mother rejected her doctor’s advice to institutionalize her, and provided her with intensive speech therapy, a structured home and a nurturing school environment. Later, with encouragement from her high school science teacher and an aunt who ran a ranch in Arizona, Dr. Grandin pursued a career in animal science. With unique abilities to think visually and recall small details she began to design humane livestock handling equipment, eventually revolutionizing the industry. Today over half the cattle in North America are handled in a system she designed. Other professional activities include developing animal welfare guidelines for the meat industry and consulting with McDonald's, Wendy’s International, Burger King, and other major companies.

Dr. Grandin obtained her B.A. from Franklin Pierce College, her M.S. in Animal Science from Arizona State University, and her Ph.D. in Animal Science from the University of Illinois. Today she teaches courses on livestock behavior and facility design at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. In 2010, Time Magazine named her one of the world’s 100 most influential people. In addition to Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism, her books Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior (2005) and Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals (2009) are best-sellers. Her life story has also been made into the HBO movie Temple Grandin, which won seven Emmy awards and a Golden Globe. In 2017, she was inducted into The Women's Hall of Fame and in 2018 was made a fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Without Apology: Black History and Civil Rights in Fort Collins – A Walking Tour and Archive Open House

Join staff from the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery and the City of Fort Collins Historic Preservation office to explore stories of Black/African American history in Fort Collins, and Black residents who fought for civil rights in their lifetimes. We’ll begin by touring through the neighborhood around Washington Park to visit a few sites where important Black residents lived in the city, and then visit the Local History Archive at the Museum for an open house featuring resources our community has saved to help keep these stories alive.

Please wear comfortable shoes and dress warmly. The group will meet in the main lobby of the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery at 408 Mason Court in Fort Collins. This event is free but capped at 30 people, so register for tickets. We will cancel/reschedule if needed due to weather.

Tales of a Time Traveler

Click "Other Dates" to access other dates and times. Times and dates are not guaranteed and are subject to change.

Narrated by David Tennant. In Tales of a Time Traveler, you will discover that time is not so easily defined. Time is illusive, impossible to hold. It can't be owned. It can't be stopped. Time travel surrounds you – from the biological clock in your brain and the changing shadows on a sundial, to the history of life on Earth. Then the story expands to the lives of stars, the time scale of the Big Bang, and the distortion of time by gravity. Evans & Sutherland Digital Theater in association with Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Once more, we are ready to take the audience on a rich and fascinating journey through our celestial neighborhood, as we look for one of organic life's key ingredients - liquid water. Why is Venus considered the hottest planet in the Solar System? Is Saturn the only Solar planet with rings? And what can possibly hide under the icy surface of Jupiter's moon, Europa? These and more questions are answered, as we visit the Sun in its cradle, the Earth as it used to be, the neighboring planets as they are today, and maybe even a yet undiscovered world which awaits our visit in the future.

Heritage Courtyard Open House

Civic Saturday

Civic Saturday

Aprill 11th, 1-3PM

We need ways to build trust, restore civic faith, and move through the challenges of feeling disappointed, scared, angry, checked out, or even hopeless and powerless to impact our communities or society. Many people lack places to connect and reflect on the opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities we need to embrace in public life.
Civic Saturdays, which originated in Seattle in 2016,  are an antidote that sparks inspiration, relationship-building, and meaning-making. Civic Saturdays have been hosted across the U.S. in local libraries, parks, museums, and more. They give folks a space to build community with no strings attached; come as you are, get to know your neighbors, and think through how we can build civic character together.
Whether a civic starting point, a refueling station, a spot for sense-making or celebration, Civic Saturdays help break down a sense of separateness and connect our hearts, inviting us to consider what it truly means to “live like a citizen” — and to commit to doing so, together.
Please join us for Fort Collins' first in-person Civic Saturday. We'll have live music from Veronica May, poetry from local community members, and opportunities to connect with your neighbors! We hope to see you there!

City Nature Challenge ID Party

Now that City Nature Challenge is over, the real work begins. All of our amazing observations of local nature can only assist with biodiversity research once they’ve been identified! No wildlife knowledge or expertise required.
